What are Japanese Candlesticks? Trading Minute
A battle in four prices, sometimes without a single blow exchanged. A Japanese candlestick summarizes price activity over a given period (one minute, one hour, one day, one week) in four values: the open, the close, the high, and the low. The body, the thick part, represents the difference between the open and the close. The wicks, those fine lines above and below, show how far the price went before returning. Green or white, the candlestick signals a close above the open. Red or black, the opposite. Nothing complicated here, just a snapshot of the power struggle between buyers and sellers over the period.
Anatomy of a Candlestick: Four Prices, One Battle
A long wick always tells a story of confrontation. A high wick signals sellers who have thwarted an attempt to rise; a low wick, buyers who have defended a floor. In both cases, someone has pushed someone back. It is this imprint that makes the candlestick useful, far more than its color alone.
Conversely, a candlestick without any wicks has a very specific name: the Marubozu, from Japanese for "shaved head." A full body, without any trace of resistance in either direction. This kind of figure signals a total absence of contestation: the dominant camp was never challenged during the period. These candlesticks make much more sense when crossed with support or resistance: a Marubozu that breaks a key level carries much more weight than a simple red body in a neutral zone.
June 2026: The Month Bitcoin Left No Room for Doubt
The clearest demonstration is very recent. Bitcoin fell by 20% in June 2026, closing the month below $60,000, its worst monthly performance since June 2022. And the monthly candlestick tells more than the number: according to CoinDesk, it took the shape of an almost perfect Marubozu, a large red body with no visible wick. The price opened on June 1 and closed on the 30th at its lowest for the month. No rebound, no recovery. Sellers never encountered serious resistance for thirty days.
The trigger did not come from crypto itself. On June 12, the IPO of SpaceX raised $75 billion, siphoning off some venture capital from the market. Five days later, Kevin Warsh, newly appointed head of the Fed, kept rates unchanged and erased any prospect of a cut in 2026.
Result: $4.5 billion in net outflows from U.S. Bitcoin spot ETFs in one month, a record. A candlestick without a wick, in short, reflects a market devoid of any buying counter-power.
A Candlestick, Never a Verdict
A single candlestick is never enough to decide. It needs confirmation: the next candlestick, a broken key level, or a volume that supports the movement. An isolated Marubozu in the middle of a calm market does not carry the same weight as a Marubozu that closes an entire month, like in June 2026.
For a retail trader, the concrete utility boils down to one sentence: spot the candlesticks that stand out (without wicks, abnormally wide bodies) and ask what they tell about the absence of contestation, before building a risk management strategy around this observation.
